Paris Syndrome: The last step of globalization.
In this article by LiveScience, the author exposes and debates about the Paris syndrome, a phenomenon that makes people feel anxious and deeply disappointed when visiting a place that is romanticized in their culture. The name “Paris syndrome” comes from the popularity of this phenomenon with Japanese people travelling to Paris.
The article talks about ‘culture shock’, and explains that a hard social and cultural contrast, plus a general idealization of a place can turn out to physical consequences, related to anxiety.
In my view, this is the final stage in a global march towards globalization. The Paris syndrome is the evidence that proves that contrasts still exist among different cultures and societies, which seems to be slowly getting lost.
